Pokagon

We just returned from a wonderful week-long Wiers/Waanders family vacation at Pokagon State Park in Indiana. We had the run of the group camp, which had several small cabins, 3 larger cabins, plus a kitchen/dining hall. The beginning of the week (Sun through about Thurs) was pretty much Wiers family time. We kids stayed in a 5-room cabin, while my parents stayed in one of the smaller cabins. Now, let me just say that the Wiers family is not much for camping. In fact, we have NEVER gone camping or done anything similar to camping. EVER. So, it was a pretty big deal that we all survived and even ENJOYED the rustic cabins (complete with bugs, a mouse our 2, no AC, and a possible raccoon visit), the buggy bathrooms, and the encounters with wildlife.

In spite of all of that, we enjoyed a wonderful vacation! There was a nice little beach, lots of space of the little ones to RUN and play, lots of time for going out for ice cream (for everyone except Jeremiah) and having campfires and s'mores. Here are some highlights of our Wiers family time at Pokagon:

Fun at the beach! Jeremiah was more of a land-lover-- all he wanted to do was dig in the sand. Cousin Josie was quite the little fish!

Mmmmmm..... sand.

Playing at the park!

Bath time in the industrial sinks in the kitchen (the thought of taking my baby into the yucky bathrooms made me shudder).

What are you doing to me?

Josie liked it! Jeremiah, not so much.

Ice cream at "Scoops"!

Josie is the only one who looks good in this picture.

The Lovenerds

We learned a hard lesson after our first visit to "Scoops." We got Jeremiah his own little scoop of vanilla ice cream, which he LOVED! When we returned to the camp, we put him down for bed and he went to sleep about 8. About 11 pm our sugared-up little guy woke up and was WIRED! He sang and babbled and talked like crazy till about 12:30, at which point we decided to go for a drive with him so we wouldn't wake up everyone else in our cabin. We ended up driving around the town of Angola for about 45 minutes and ended up stopping at Meijer (open 24 hours-- YAY!) and letting J run around the aisles in nothing but a diaper (yep, we were THOSE parents), in hopes that he would wear himself out! Adam was finally able to get him to go back to sleep when we got back to our cabin at about 2 am. In hindsight, we should have known this was coming-- after he ate his scoop of ice cream he was running around the deck yelling "I did it! I did it!" over and over again. Anyway, lesson learned-- no more ice cream for Jeremiah unless it's for breakfast.

2 visits to Shipshewana and Amish country!

A visit to The Breadbox Bakery for donuts and fritters.

A ride on a carousel!

A visit to the Menno-Hof to learn about the Amish and Mennonite people.

Lunch at the Rise 'n' Roll Bakery. I would like to live there.

Enjoying the lake and Bob and Lynda's awesome raft!

Beautiful Lake James

Stay tuned for a post about the Happy Waanderers Reunion!

P.S. Now it's back to reality-- we found out today that Jeremiah has ANOTHER ear infection. :(

  1. LOVE reading about your week in Indiana!! Wish you could've come to Michigan again this summer, but such is life -- we'll figure out sometime to get together again somehow...

About Jeremiah - has your doctor talked about tubes at all? I'm actually VERY against them in general, but in J's case, I'm starting to think it might be a good idea! :0/

  2. She mentioned tubes in May when he had an infection, but didn't mention them this time. We go back Aug. 19 for his 18 mo appt and she'll re-check his ears then. I will definitely be asking about tubes-- fall/winter could be miserable without them!
